The Championships, Wimbledon 2017 and Opencell

This year’s historic Wimbledon Championships showcased an exciting mix of previous reigning champions and first-time winners, with Roger Federer returning to claim his eighth Grand Slam title, and Spain’s Garbine Muguruza beating five-time champion Venus Williams in straight sets. We all watched with bated breath as the new contenders took on their heroes, and players’ dreams of glory were earned and lost.

In its 131st year, The Championships is widely known as the ultimate global tennis tournament, as well as an enduring favourite of British sporting competitions. Though there’s a lot of wonderful ‘best of British’ tradition integral to the running of The Championships, there are also developments which are helping to bring it forward, into more tech-enabled times.

Working with the amazing on-site IT team and initially two of the four UK mobile phone network providers, Opencell is proud to have supplied the All England Lawn Tennis Club a 24/7, multi-operator phone service inside the media centre and sub-surface areas for the duration of The Championships.

We helped the media, players, visitors and AELTC staff stay connected, ensuring that every day, everyone indoors had network. Following fantastic feedback, we’re looking forward to donning our tennis whites and doing the same at the The Championships 2018.
